What to see at Instituto Cultural Cabañas

Instituto Cultural Cabañas brings together Orozco’s murals and a large neoclassical complex built as a charitable institution. The building was designed by Manuel Tolsá at Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas’s request; construction began in 1805, and it opened in 1810 as the Casa de la Caridad y la Misericordia.

Start with the Capilla Tolsá dome, where El Hombre de Fuego is the focal mural. Mexico’s cultural information system describes it as Orozco’s masterwork. The city tourism page identifies it as the principal work among 57 murals by the artist at the site.

Give yourself time to notice the scale of the complex as you move through it: it has 23 patios, 106 rooms, 78 corridors and two chapels. The museum holds 340 works by Orozco, displayed on a rotating basis, so the selection on view can change.

The former Hospicio Cabañas became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Its permanent galleries include the Museo de Sitio and Obra de José Clemente Orozco, alongside temporary galleries.
