The theatre and its historic-centre setting

Teatro Degollado is a historic-centre landmark whose neoclassical design makes the exterior part of the visit. Architect Jacobo Gálvez designed the theatre, and construction began in 1856. It opened on September 13, 1866, with Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor, featuring soprano Ángela Peralta.

Look up at the facade’s portico for the high-relief tympanum inspired by Apollo and the Muses, created by sculptor Benito Castañeda. Behind the theatre, a fountain and bronze sculptural group by Rafael Zamarripa commemorate Guadalajara’s founding. Inside, the main hall ceiling features a mural representing Canto Cuarto of Dante’s Divine Comedy, painted by Gálvez, Gerardo Suárez and Carlos Villaseñor.

The theatre is part of the city’s historic-centre visitor area, so it can fit into a walking day there. A one-day route through Guadalajara’s historic centre offers a way to plan other stops alongside it.

How do you check performances and buy tickets?

How do you check performances and buy tickets?

Check the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra’s official site for current performances and ticket information. The OFJ’s concerts are a natural reason to visit: Teatro Degollado is its home venue, and the main hall has around 867 seats according to Jalisco tourism. The OFJ’s seating categories include luneta, anfiteatro and three levels of palcos.

The OFJ box office is open Monday through Sunday, 10:00–15:00 and 16:00–20:00. For OFJ concerts, discounts of 30% are available only at the box office for students, teachers, older adults with valid identification, and people with disabilities. Children older than 6 may enter. Late arrivals are not admitted until the intermission after a concert has begun.

For season concerts, the OFJ also holds public pre-concert appreciation talks on Thursdays at 19:00 in the theatre’s Sala de Cámara, entered from Morelos Street; these talks do not require a ticket. Check the official site before you go, since performance listings, access arrangements and ticket details can change.

Teatro Degollado is about a 16-minute walk from Hotel Gallo, or about 4 minutes by car. Its address places it in Centro, but the available official sources do not identify a recommended transit stop or a specific walking route.

For public transport connections around Guadalajara, consult this guide to Guadalajara’s metro and local transport and check current service before setting out.

If you walk, use the theatre’s address as your destination and allow for your chosen route through the historic centre. You could pair the visit with the Instituto Cultural Cabañas or Plaza de los Mariachis, both nearby landmarks.

The sources do not give a recommended duration for an independent visit, so make time according to whether you are attending a performance or checking access to the interior.

Before and after a performance

Before and after a performance

For an interior visit without a performance, Jalisco’s tourism office gives public viewing hours as Tuesday through Friday, 13:00–15:00. A Guadalajara tourism source gives daily public-place hours of 10:00–15:00 and 16:00–20:00, so confirm access with the theatre or the relevant official tourism source before making a special trip.

Give yourself time to see the exterior and the adjoining plaza before a performance, then check the venue’s entry instructions and ticket details. If you are combining the theatre with other historic-centre stops, plan the order around the performance time and any interior-access hours you have confirmed.
