The museum covers regional history from the first inhabitants through the Revolution, including the daily life and customs of Jalisco’s Indigenous peoples. Its collections range from fossils and archaeological objects to paintings and ethnographic material.

The paleontological collection includes a complete mammoth skeleton and fossils found in the surrounding area. Archaeological holdings include projectile points and tools associated with early inhabitants, alongside art from cultures of western Mesoamerica. Ethnographic displays include material about the Cora and Wixárika (Huichol) peoples.

Paintings span the 17th through 20th centuries. Artists represented include Echave, Juárez, Rodríguez Juárez, Villalpando, Cabrera, Rivera and Dr. Atl.

The collections sit within the former Seminario Tridentino de San José. Its Baroque façade, central courtyard and staircase are notable features. The building later served as a prison and military barracks during the War of Independence, then as a men’s school; it opened as a museum in 1918.

The museum building itself adds architectural and historical context to a visit: it began as a seminary, served several other roles, and later became a museum. You can make its collections the main stop, then plan other Centro Histórico sights around your available time.
